Penguin 85th x National Literacy Trust
In collaboration with the National Literacy Trust, Penguin asked five much-loved artists and illustrators to dream up original prints themed around the transformative power of books and reading, to commemorate Penguin’s 85th birthday.
The future of reading and writing in the UK depends on the National Literacy Trust, who are facing an urgent funding crisis as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Support them by bringing these special edition prints into your home.
The prints will be available for purchase for 85 days from Penguin’s anniversary of 30th July, until 23rd October. At least £50 of each framed print and £20 of each unframed print will directly support the National Literacy Trust.
About Coralie Bickford-Smith, the artist
“Once upon a time” is such an iconic opening, and immediately evokes the intrigue and excitement you feel when diving into a new story. It reminds me of the joy of being read stories as a child, and that you can go anywhere within the pages of a book. Visually I played with the iconography of the Fox and the Star cover, which is inspired by beautiful past editions of fairytales.”
Coralie Bickford-Smith is one of the most renowned designers in the publishing industry, especially recognised and celebrated for her illustrated covers of Penguin's clothbound classics. Her first book, The Fox and the Star, was named Waterstones Book of the Year and as one of Time Out's 100 Children's Books of All Time. Her design work has been featured in numerous publications, including the New York Times and the Guardian.
