Ladybird books are known and loved the world over. For millions of people, they bring back the golden days of childhood - learning to read, discovering the magic of books, and growing up.
The very first Ladybird book was produced by a jobbing printer called Wills & Hepworth during the First World War. Based in Leicestershire, the company began to publish ‘pure and healthy literature’ for children, and registered the Ladybird logo in 1915.
In 1940, Wills & Hepworth printed Bunnikin’s Picnic Party, the first Ladybird book in the familiar small hardback format. The standard price of these little books remained at 2’6d for 29 years. After the Second World War, Ladybird began to expand the subject matter of their books – from nature, science and history to the Key Words Reading Scheme and, perhaps most famously, fairy tales.
The period of 1940-1980 is often considered the golden age of Ladybird illustration and design. A selection of well-loved covers from this era is now brought together in this box, for fans both young and old. Ladybird celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2015 – a century of words and pictures.
